“Where did he go?”

Before I started blogging earlier this year, I wrote down three “rules of thumb” that I wanted to guide me when I posted:

  • Link out. Before expecting anyone read what I have to say, I should make sure that I’ve read and can point to the good work of others.
  • Add value. I wanted to be constructive and original, and I have tried to not follow every news story or comment on every topic in front of us, unless doing so adds value.

  • Be constructive. There’s more than enough snark on the web, and there are plenty of people with stronger and perhaps opinions than mine. I wanted the blog to offer ideas, options and alternatives, not just criticism.

People who read this blog can decide how well I’ve done against my rules of thumb, but they all played a role in my month-long vacation in the stratosphere. We all have work commitments, holiday demands and personal lives (well, we try), but for me, the past month’s absence reflects a simple reality: I didn’t feel I had a clear bead on what I wanted to say.

Now, four weeks and one turkey later, things have changed. Glad to be back.
