Patent wars amid the new choke points

Last week, Business Insider pointed to “The Patent Wars“, an illustration of who’s suing whom in what the chart described as “the convoluted battlefield of tech IP”.

The outer rim of the chart also shows who is selling patents to whom. At BI, a brief introduction by Ashley Lutz describes Kodak as “relying on patents to stay in business, while Yahoo and AOL are battling with Facebook.”

Although technology patents are not quite publishing, many of these players represent the new choke points for content dissemination. It’s a world somewhat foreign to many publishers, but it is likely the world in which we succeed (or fail) in the not-too-distant future.
